In a significant step toward greater government transparency, two organizations focused on publishing government data have joined forces to present major new comprehensive, user friendly, publicly accessible databases of state and federal bills. Federal and state bills can be accessed on the http://www.billtrack50.com and http://www.govtrack.us websites for free, and a professional version allowing for advanced tracking and sharing is available through BillTrack50. The sites present bill text, status, and summaries in a format easily located by Google-like word search or by using more exact information like legislator names or bill numbers. Karen Suhaka, president of LegiNation said the combined data will present a more accurate picture of the political landscape across the country, making it is easier to identify state and federal policy trends. The partners also hope to improve the ability to analyze how ideas spread in government.

People who are frustrated with Congress must look at the possibility of successful engagement at the state level. Making this data available to the public and to cost-conscious legislative professionals encourages everyone, not just moneyed interests, to make their voice heard in government, Ms. Suhaka said. Summer Teen Academies Coming to San Diego State University

The College of Extended Studies at San Diego State University (SDSU) is offering unique summer teen academies this coming summer that will focus on providing campers with a behind-the-scenes experience in one of several possible future careers. Areas that will be explored include video game design, TV news production, and crime scene technology, among others.

The Teen CAMPX Career Exploration Academies are designed for high school students entering grades 9-12, and are held on campus at SDSU, giving participants a real feel for what it’s like to learn at a major university. Each week-long camp is taught by an industry expert who guides the campers through a very unique learning experience that includes hands-on activities, field trips, and more. Camps are one week in length, from 8:30 am to 4 pm each day and will run between June 20 and August 12.

Missouri District Uses Mobile Technology to Focus on State Testing

Exeter R-VI School District, a small district in Southwest Missouri, will be deploying 50 Kineo tablets into Exeter Elementary School. The district plans to pilot the strategy with the initial 50 devices in order to consider a one-to-one strategy in the future. They are implementing Brainchilds AYP package which includes 50 Kineos, Achiever! subscription for the whole school, and 3 days of onsite professional development. Kineo’s come loaded with Achiever! software to help students prepare for the state’s MAP testing.

Students at Exeter Elementary will be able to use the Kineo for individualized instruction to help them master the standards from Missouri’s GLE’s. For each standard, students will take a pretest to establish their baseline scores. If scores are low, students can watch instructional videos and work through the programs study mode to improve proficiency. Study mode provides immediate feedback for incorrect answers and allows students to work through problems until they get the answer correct. Post test allow for teachers to monitor progress and view reports on student proficiency. Siena Research Institute Announces 1st Annual State of Connecticut Survey: The Economy and Personal Finances

Fifty-two percent of Connecticut residents now believe our countrys best economic days are behind us and that the next generation will have to accept a lower standard of living while 45 percent feel the current economic problems are temporary and we will return to financial health according to a new survey released today from the Siena (College) Research Institute (SRI) and underwritten by First Niagara Bank. The cost of food is a financial hardship for 71 percent, gas prices seriously impact 72 percent and home heating is a concern for 77 percent. Fifty-five percent either put no money aside (39%) for retirement this year beyond any contribution their employer may have made or withdrew (16%) from their savings to meet expenses and only 32 percent say it is completely true that they have a savings account with at least six months of expenses in it.
