National Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition Opens Feb. 12, 2009, at the Library of Congress

Washington, DC (PRWEB) January 27, 2009

“With Malice Toward None: The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition” opens at the Library of Congress on Feb. 12, 2009, in celebration of the 200th birthday of America’s 16th president, offering the public the opportunity to view rarely seen treasures from the Library’s collections.

SPECIAL NOTE: An online pressroom containing background materials and high-resolution images is available by visiting http://www.loc.gov/pressroom/.

This major exhibition, made possible through the generous support of Union Pacific Corporation, runs through May 9, 2009, after which it will travel to five U.S. cities.

“With Malice Toward None: The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition” will chart Lincoln’s growth from prairie lawyer to preeminent statesman and address the monumental issues he faced, including slavery and race, the dissolution of the Union, and the Civil War.

The exhibit will reveal Lincoln the man, whose thoughts, words, and actions were deeply affected by personal experiences and pivotal historic events. By placing Lincoln’s words in a historical context, the exhibition will give visitors a deeper understanding of how remarkable Lincoln’s decisions were for their time and why his words continue to resonate today.

The exhibition will draw on the vast and varied collections of Lincoln material in the Library and will include letters, photographs, political cartoons, period engravings, speeches, and artifacts. The actual grammar book studied by Lincoln in his effort to master English, the notes he prepared in advance of his debates with Senator Stephen Douglas, and the personal scrapbook he assembled of newspaper clippings of the debates bring this iconic figure to life.

Other items include campaign and election ephemera and such treasures as an autobiography which Lincoln supplied to admiring biographers, his penciled “Farewell Address” as he boarded the train from Springfield, Ill., his first and second Inaugural Addresses, the Bible upon which he took the oath of office on March 4, 1861 (used again by Barack Obama to assume office on Jan. 20, 2009), his unforgettable Gettysburg Address, and his impassioned letter to Albert Hodges in defense of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Military enthusiasts will have the opportunity to see the highly critical letter Lincoln wrote but never sent to Gen. George Meade following the Battle of Gettysburg, the signed commission of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant as Lieutenant General, several inquiring and sometimes reprimanding letters to Gen. George McClellan, and the letter of thanks to Gen. William T. Sherman for the capture of Savannah, Ga.

The exhibition will include the Lincoln family Bible, a caned chair from the Lincoln and Herndon Law Office on loan from the Union Pacific Railroad Museum, daguerreotype photographs of the Lincoln family and the contents of Lincoln’s pockets on the night he was assassinated. A seldom-seen exchange of letters during the 1860 presidential campaign between the Republican candidate and Miss Grace Bedell concerning the possible benefits of his growing a beard will be loaned to the exhibition from the Benjamin Shapell Family Manuscript Foundation and the Detroit Public Library. Aspiring poets will enjoy Lincoln’s early attempts at this difficult art form, as well as Walt Whitman’s Civil War diary and verse.

A companion volume, “In Lincoln’s Hand: His Original Manuscripts With Commentary by Distinguished Americans,” will feature original essays about the most important Lincoln documents, including the Gettysburg Address and Lincoln’s Second Inaugural, by people such as writers John Updike, E.L. Doctorow, and Walter Mosley; Presidents Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush; Lincoln and Civil War scholars Drew Gilpin Faust, Doris Kearns Goodwin, and James McPherson; and actors Liam Neeson and Sam Waterston. The book, published by the Library of Congress with Bantam Dell, goes on sale Jan. 27, 2009.

An all-day Lincoln symposium March 4, 2009 (the 148th anniversary of Lincoln’s first inauguration), at the Library of Congress will feature six award-winning scholars: William Lee Miller, James M. McPherson, Douglas L. Wilson, Lucas Morel, Harold Holzer, and Elizabeth D. Leonard.

The Library of Congress also will hold teacher institutes Feb. 27 and 28, March 3-5, March 27 and 28, and April 6-8 to equip educators from across the country to teach about Abraham Lincoln through the use of primary and Web-based materials. Participants will develop strategies and curriculum materials they can use in their school districts, schools and classrooms.

“With Malice Toward None” opens to the public from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Feb. 12, 2009, on the second floor of the Library’s Thomas Jefferson Building at 10 First Street S.E., Washington D.C. Normal visitor hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday, recommence the following day.

After the exhibit closes in Washington, it will travel to The California Museum in Sacramento, Calif. (spring/summer 2009); the Newberry Library in Chicago (fall 2009); the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis (winter/spring 2010); the Atlanta History Center in Atlanta (fall 2010); and the Durham Western Heritage Museum in Omaha, Neb. (winter 2011).

Rules of The Road’ Feb. 15th Webinar Presented By Sean McKay, Vice President Of Business Development At American IRA-A National Provider Of Self-Directed IRAs-Free to All

Greenville, SC (PRWEB) February 11, 2012

Sean McKay, Vice President of Business Development at American IRA-a National Provider of Self-Directed IRAs, announces free ‘Rules of The Road’ February 15th Webinar.

Sean Mckay says “We developed this webinar to help get the word out about things that people need to avoid within their self-directed IRA so that they can properly acquire assets. The feedback we received from our first month of these webinars was so overwhelmingly positive that we have decided to continue to offer this webinar each month.”

Topics that will be covered in this webinar include but are not limited to:

*Disqualified Persons

*Self-dealing

*Conflicts of Interest

*Direct Prohibited Transactions

*Proper Acquisition of Assets

*and much more…

When Congress first designed the IRA in 1974, they built in a number of restrictions meant to prevent IRA owners from using these vehicles to benefit themselves prior to retirement. For this reason, the following transactions are prohibited within IRAs:

*They cannot buy property from their IRA.

*They cannot sell property to their IRA.

*Their relatives, defined as ascendants and descendants and their spouses, may not buy from or sell directly to their IRA.

*Their IRA cannot engage in any of the above transactions with any entities controlled by their ascendants, descendants, or any of their spouses.

*Their IRA cannot engage in transactions directly with their accountant, financial advisor, tax attorney or anyone else who advises them on their IRA, nor with any business entity they control.

*They cannot use their IRA, nor the assets within them, as security for a loan for use outside the IRA (this rule is commonly misunderstood.)

Sean interjects, “In plain English, this means they cannot use their IRA directly for their own benefit, nor that of those related to them, and their advisors cannot manipulate them into using their IRA to benefit themselves. Their IRA exists for one purpose only: To provide economic security for them after they turn 59

San Francisco’s Fillmore Jazz District Celebrates Reemergence with Multi-Venue, Culture and Entertainment-Filled Affair (Feb. 28, 2008) — African and Japanese Americans Commemorate Shared Experiences of the 1940s and 1950s

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) February 4, 2008

As so consummately described by Elizabeth Pepin and Lewis Watts in “Harlem of the West: The San Francisco Fillmore Jazz Era,” the Fillmore District became the Harlem of San Francisco during World War II with the large migration of African Americans from the South. The Fillmore in the 1940′s and 1950′s was an eclectic, integrated, and hopping neighborhood dotted with restaurants, pool halls, theaters and shops — many minority-owned and boasting two dozen active nightclubs and music joints within its one square mile. Although it has been commemorated in songs, poems, and in Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” few people today know of the rich history of the Fillmore and its musical legacy because it vanished abruptly and so thoroughly due to redevelopment in the 1960s.

On Thursday, February 28, 2008, the San Francisco Housing Development Corporation (SFHDC) will celebrate the reemergence of The Fillmore, and commemorate 20 years of service to helping minorities and low-income families achieve financial stability through homeownership. Taking part in the evening celebration are numerous notable San Francisco establishments such as the Boom Boom Room, Fillmore Auditorium. Fillmore Jazz Heritage Center, Rasselas Jazz Club, Sheba Lounge, Lorraine Hansberry Theatre, Lush Life Gallery and Marcus Books along with other local merchants and corporate sponsors to make this Black History Month Celebration a lively, memorable affair to help revive the neighborhood as the center of music and cultural diversity. SFHDC will also recognize outstanding individuals whose work and achievements have furthered community economic development and cultural diversity in San Francisco.

In reminiscence of 1940′s and 50′s Jazz icons like Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Billy Holiday, guests will enjoy delectable foods, refreshing libations, fine art and culture. More than 2,000 attendees are expected to stroll through the Fillmore Jazz District to network and socialize with Bay Area professional and corporate leaders, and learn about the important role the district has played in San Francisco history, while enjoying the soulful music of yesterday, today and tomorrow. All-inclusive VIP tickets are $ 150 (includes exclusive VIP receptions; access to all participating event venues and performances including the Ledisi concert at the Fillmore Auditorium, complimentary cocktails, light faire, “Cultural Diversity in San Francisco” presentation and souvenir journal). Individual general admission is $ 100 (includes special cocktail discounts and access to all participating event venues and performances — except the Ledisi concert at the Fillmore Auditorium. Purchase all tickets online at http://www.sfhdcevents.org.

The Bay Area’s own soulful Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter Ledisi will headline the impressive array of local entertainment talent that will also include Linda Tillery & the Heritage Choir performing their famed “Survival Music” (spirituals, work songs, field hollers and slave songs); winner of the 2005 Guitar Player of the Year Award, musical director and vocalist Alvon Johnson; soulful jazz and blues songstress Lady Memphis; sensational vibes aficionado Ricky Kelly, and the talented Lorraine Hansberry Theatre Thespians performing captivating skits.

San Francisco’s Japantown, one of only three remaining in the United States, dates from the great earthquake and fire of 1906, when the Japanese population united west of the fire line. Uprooted by World War II, the Japanese were replaced mostly by African-Americans, who brought their vibrant musical heritage with them. The area was one of the first to experience the dramatic changes of 1950′s urban renewal programs — which continue. In recent years the area has seen a wealth of Japanese architecture next to the classic Victorians and a rebirth of African-American culture in the Fillmore Jazz Preservation District.

To that end, the National Japanese American Historical Society and Japantown Task Force will actively support the Fillmore Jazz District celebration to commemorate the 1940′s and 1950′s when both the Japanese and African American communities shared the Western Addition before, and more specifically, after the World War II Japanese-American internment.

Washington Mutual, First Republic Bank, Citibank, Wells Fargo, Wachovia Bank, Bank of America, Comerica Bank, Comcast, Union Bank of California and Lotus Vodka are among the event’s generous corporate sponsors. Media sponsors are Black Business Listings, CityFlight.com, Clear Channel Radio, KBLX 102.9, KKSF 103.7, PR, et Cetera, Inc. and Western Edition Newspaper.

About San Francisco Housing Development Corporation:

Since its inception in 1988, San Francisco Housing Development Corporation’s (SFHDC) mission has been to foster stability in the city’s African-American and immigrant communities through the development of affordable housing and the facilitation of home ownership.

Harris’ paintings have been exhibited in public venues, museums and galleries, and represented in private collections throughout the United States and Europe. Educated at the Art Institute of Chicago, she has developed work considered influential in humanitarian and environmental arenas. Harris’ participation in the “Cool Globes” exhibit along the Chicago lakefront and Field Museum campus in 2007 led to her work being chosen for the National Botanic Garden in Washington D.C. President Obama Gives Gershwin Prize For Popular Song To Stevie Wonder Feb. 25

(Vocus) February 16, 2009

President Barack Obama will give the Second Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song to Stevie Wonder on Feb. 25 at a special concert in the East Room of the White House in celebration of African American History Month. The program, to be taped by WETA Washington, D.C., as part of the In Performance at the White House series, will air on PBS stations nationwide on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at 8 p.m. ET (check local listings) as “Stevie Wonder In Performance at the White House: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize.”

The concert will feature a tribute by top performers singing the songs that propelled Wonder to the ranks of international stardom. The full line-up of performers will be announced soon.

The Gershwin Prize for Popular Song was created by the Library of Congress to honor artists whose creative output transcends distinctions between musical styles and idioms, bringing diverse listeners together, and fostering mutual understanding and appreciation.

“Stevie Wonder is the epitome of what the Gershwin Prize stands for,” said Librarian of Congress James H. Billington, who selected Stevie Wonder for the honor in September 2008. “He has crossed musical and cultural boundaries and has made contributions to humanity far beyond the realm of entertainment.”

The prize commemorates George and Ira Gershwin, the legendary American songwriting team whose extensive manuscript collections reside in the Library of Congress. The prize is awarded to musicians whose lifetime contributions in the field of popular song exemplify the standard of excellence associated with the Gershwins. Paul Simon in 2007 received the first Gershwin Prize.

As an added distinction to this year’s Gershwin Prize, the Library has offered, and Stevie Wonder has accepted, a musical commission. He joins a group of eminent composers who have received Library commissions, ranging from Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein to Paquito D’Rivera. Stevie Wonder will present the piece at a recital in honor of the Gerswhin Prize Feb. 23 in the Library’s Coolidge Auditorium.

Details about Stevie Wonder’s illustrious career can be found here: http://www.loc.gov/today/pr/2008/08-144.html

The creators and executive producers of the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song are Peter and Bob Kaminsky, Mark Krantz and Cappy McGarr, who are also the creators and executive producers of the Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, now in its 11th year. Dalton Delan and David S. Thompson are executive producers for WETA Washington, D.C.

In making the selection for the prize, Librarian of Congress James H. Billington turned for advice to leading members of the music and entertainment communities. The advisory committee consisted of Michael Feinstein, Lorne Michaels, Phil Ramone, Paul Simon and Allen Toussaint.

“In Performance at the White House” began with an East Room recital by the legendary pianist Vladimir Horowitz in 1978, and since then has embraced virtually every genre of American music: pop, country, gospel, jazz and the blues among them. The series, created by public broadcaster WETA Washington, D.C., and spanning every presidential administration since President Carter, was developed to showcase the rich fabric of American culture in the setting of the nation’s most famous home. Past programs have showcased such talent as the United States Marine Band, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, the best of Broadway musicals and the Dance Theatre of Harlem. “Stevie Wonder In Performance at the White House: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize” is the first “In Performance” of President Barack Obama’s Administration.

WETA Washington, D.C., is the third-largest producing station for public television. WETA’s other productions and co-productions include “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer,” “Washington Week with Gwen Ifill and National Journal,” “The Kennedy Center Presents,” and documentaries by filmmaker Ken Burns, including “THE WAR” and coming this fall, “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.” Sharon Percy Rockefeller is president and CEO. More information on WETA and its programs and services is available at http://www.weta.org.

The Library of Congress is home to the George and Ira Gershwin Collection, the world’s preeminent resource for the documentary legacy of the Gershwin brothers. It contains a wealth of materials that provide insight into their careers and personalities, including manuscripts and printed music, photographs, correspondence, business papers, scrapbooks and iconography. A permanent tribute to the Gershwins and their work, the Gershwin Room features George’s piano and desk, Ira’s typing table and typewriter, self portraits of both brothers, and a selection of musical manuscripts from Gershwin stage and screen shows such as “Lady Be Good,” “Funny Face,” “Girl Crazy” and “Of Thee I Sing.” Many of the Library’s rich resources can be accessed through its Web site at http://www.loc.gov and via interactive exhibitions on a new, personalized Web site at http://www.myLOC.gov.

Fans and critics alike have embraced the music of John Wetton and Geoffrey Downes, whose songwriting formed much of the fabric of 2008′s successful Asia reunion release, Phoenix. A short tour will precede the 1Q 09 release of the album, and there will be a special DVD recording before a limited audience at the historic St. Mary-le-Bow Church in London on February 21st. The immediate enthusiasm shown by fans for that show has allowed management to release a few extra tickets (originally meant for press) to fans. They can be obtained at http://www.ticketmaster.co.uk.

Preceding the DVD recording, the band will visit Japan for a series of shows in major cities leading up to a date in Holland just prior to the recording of the DVD in London – the Zoetemeer show on February 19 will be a preview of the set list.

About the Band:

The pure power of Geoff Downes’ keyboards and John Wetton’s jaw-dropping voice and stellar bass playing are enhanced by compelling guitar virtuoso Dave Kilminster, fresh from successful tours with Roger Waters and Keith Emerson, and former ELO Cellist Hugh McDowell, whose unique sound has helped frame all three iCon studio releases. Rounding out the band is Pete Riley, considered one of the “best drummers in the world”, whose work with Keith Emerson, Kilminster and extensive live and session work shows an extraordinary breadth and depth of style.

Special Guest Appearances by Andreas Vollenweider and Anne-Marie Helder:

John and Geoff are pleased to announce that renowned new age harpist Andreas Vollenweider will add his unique sound to the third iCon album. The album and Holland / London performances will also feature acclaimed vocalist Anne-Marie Helder whose past work with Karnataka and current ventures with Panic Room, Mostly Autumn and her solo material have won her praise and a growing international audience.

Wetton and Downes are pleased to be able to respond to fan and critical demand by returning to the studio to create this new album and then to share it live with these outstanding players.
