Smart Heat, Democratic Energy, and Solar Clothes among the Predictions for Energy Efficiency in 2011

Portland, Oregon (PRWEB) December 29, 2011

RealEnergyWriters.com, which publishes Energy Efficiency Markets Newsletter, Podcast, and blog, has released its predictions for energy efficiency in 2012. The website is a leading source of information about the growing energy efficiency industry. Elisa Woods blog is republished widely on energy and environmental sites, and Lisa Cohns podcast has more than 220,000 subscribers.

Predictions for 2012:

1. We have seen a strong emphasis on smart electricity devices in recent years. Next well see more interest in smart heat. Heat accounts for more than 30% of all U.S. energy consumption. Yet we often waste heat in conventional power production as well as in solar generation. Proven and new technologies show us how to reuse it. We’ll hear more about them this year.

2. The democratization of energy movement is going to accelerate, albeit slowly, as home energy displays and other energy management devices become increasingly consumer friendly.

3. Policy makers will continue to favor energy efficiency as the most cost-effective way to cut emissions and reduce electricity costs.

4. We will see behavioral, cognitive and social scientists increasingly enter the energy industry, as institutions like the National Science Foundation fund more research on how and why consumers make energy choices.

5. More of us will rely on Facebook for energy news. Look for companies like Opower to lead the way in creating new uses for social networks.

6. A celebrity is going to wear a solar dress or other article of solar clothing at a major event like the Academy Awards.

7. US manufacturers will increasingly look to the developing world as a market for distributed generation and portable smart energy devices. Cell phones are used widely in Africa, but it’s hard to find electrical outlets for charging them. Small off-the-grid electrical sources will solve this problem, as well as provide people in the developing world with lights and pumped water.

8. Smart meters will be introduced more carefully to US customers, with an eye toward educating ratepayers before undertaking massive installations. Utilities have learned lessons from the small but vocal opposition that sprang up in California and Maine.

Parker Waichman LLP Strongly Supports Democratic Party Nomination of New York Incumbent and Zadroga Act Champion, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, For U.S. Senate

New York, New York (PRWEB) March 19, 2012

Parker Waichman LLP strongly supports the nomination of incumbent Senator Kirsten Gillibrand as the New York Democratic Party’s candidate for the U.S. Senate. Parker Waichman LLP recognizes that Senator Gillibrand can be counted on as a steadfast advocate for sickened Ground Zero rescue and recovery workers, as evidenced by her tireless support for passage of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, and her forceful call that the Act be expanded to cover 9/11 first responders stricken with cancer. The New York State Democratic Committee will meet today in New York City to nominate Senator Gillibrand as its candidate for U.S. Senate. [nydems.org/press/new-york-state-democratic-committee-members-meet-new-york-city-nominate-gillibrand-us-senate]

According to Parker Waichman LLP, The Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act was named after deceased New York Police Department detective James Zadroga, who had worked at Ground Zero, and like so many of the heroes who responded to the tragedy, became seriously ill due to exposure to toxic dust. The Zadroga Act reopened the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund for five years to provide payment for job and economic losses for first responders, those trapped in the buildings, and local residents, who suffered illness or injuries related to the toxic dust. The Act finally became law in December 2010, following a hard fought battle. Parker Waichman LLP, which worked side by side with Ground Zero workers and their advocates for its passage of the Zadroga Act, recognizes its passage would not have been possible without the strong and tireless support of Senator Gillibrand. [gillibrand.senate.gov/newsroom/press/release/gillibrand-schumer-lautenberg-menendez-introduce-james-zadroga-9/11-health-and-compensation-act]

Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, thousands of Ground Zero responders have been diagnosed with various illnesses, including cancers and respiratory diseases, because of their exposure to toxic dust, according to Parker Waichman LLP. While many of those sickened first responders are now eligible to receive help thanks to the Zadroga Act, those who have been stricken with cancer have been deemed ineligible for compensation. In a report issued last summer, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) announced cancers would not be named a covered condition under the Zadroga Act because a review of scientific evidence had purportedly found very little evidence of a link between the disease and Ground Zero toxic dust. The decision to exclude cancer from Zadroga Act compensation was made despite a sweeping 20011 study of New York City firefighters which found a 19% increase in cancer overall in those who responded to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. [cdc.gov/niosh/docs/2011-197/pdfs/2011-197.pdf; thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736%2811%2960989-6/abstract]

According to Parker Waichman LLP, NIOSH is expected to revisit the issue of cancer coverage later this year. Since last year’s decision, Senator Gillibrand has repeatedly and forcefully called for the expansion of the Zadroga Act to include cancer coverage. Among other things, Senator Gillibrand joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers in signing a petition demanding the Zadroga Act be expanded to include first-responders who developed cancer after working at Ground Zero.[kirstengillibrand.com/news/zadroga-act-should-cover-cancer-care-for-bravest-who-worked-ground-zero-lawmakers]

Because of her work on behalf of 9/11 terrorist attack first responders, these heroes have not been forgotten. Ground Zero rescue and recovery workers need Senator Gillibrand in the U.S. Senate to continue fighting on their behalf. For that reason, Parker Waichman calls on the New York State Democratic Committee to once again nominate Senator Gillibrand as the party’s candidate for U.S. Senate when it convenes on Monday in New York City.

“Parker Waichman is proud to support Senator Gillibrands reelection bid. Her willingness to fight tough battles on behalf of all New Yorkers is exemplified by the work she has tirelessly done for the 9/11 First Responders and her key role in passage of the Zadroga Act to provide health benefits and compensation for these heroes, states Jerrold Parker, Founding Partner of Parker Waichman LLP. We were proud to offer our support to her in that effort and will continue to support her in others.

Parker Waichman LLP continues to work along side Ground Zero rescue workers to make sure these heroes receive all of the compensation they are entitled to under the Zadroga Act. DreamHost Is Named On WorldBlu List of Most Democratic Workplaces 2011

Brea, CA (PRWEB) May 13, 2011

DreamHost is one of 52 organizations named on the WorldBlu List of Most Democratic Workplaces 2011, a global certification given by WorldBlu, a company specializing in organizational democracy.

The announcement came as part of the fifth annual Democracy in the Workplace Day on April 12th. For-profit and non-profit organizations from across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the UK, India, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Malaysia made the WorldBlu List from a diverse pool of industries. DreamHost was first named as a Most Democratic Workplace in 2008 and has been a staple on the WorldBlu list for the last four years.

Working in a democratic environment makes employees feel more connected to the work that they do because they feel like they can take ownership of their individual tasks, says DreamHost co-founder Dallas Kashuba. The result is empowered employees who are prepared to tackle all sorts of challenges.

In order to be considered for the WorldBlu certification, all DreamHost employees had to complete a survey evaluating the companys practice of ten democratic principles such as transparency, dialogue and listening, integrity, accountability, and a choice on a leadership, an individual, a system and a process level. Numerous organizations applied, but in the end, only 52 received the certification.

Embodying these democratic principles in the workplace isnt just rhetoric; its a top priority, says Brett Dunst, vice president of marketing and corporate communications at DreamHost. We want to make sure each and every employee feels empowered enough to make decisions, and knows that we trust their judgment.

Representatives from DreamHost will be attending WorldBlu Live, an annual two-day event for leaders of democratic workplaces from around the globe held May 19-20 in San Francisco.
