Vegetarians and foodie fans can access the new blog post here:

In their latest blog post, Jenny Sangler makes reference to one of her previous posts in which explains the wide use of cochineal a food dye made from crushed insects.

She explains that Starbucks have recently hit the headlines by using this same food dye in their Strawberry Frappuccino and Strawberry Smoothies in order to give them a pink tint.

An anonymous company employee, also a vegan, tipped the lid on Starbucks by revealing the use of this secret ingredient to This Dish is Veg, a popular website for those who are vegetarian. The whistle blower also included a photo of the ingredients.

Cochineal, although considered to be safe by the FDA, isnt suitable for vegans and anyone who doesnt want to consume a product made from crushed insects, vegan or otherwise, needs to be aware that it is a common addition to many pink and red-colored foods and drinks such as jelly, marinades, cheese and certain alcoholic drinks Jenny adds.

She continues to explain that Starbucks promptly issued a statement due to mounting pressure from the vegan community. Within the statement they claimed that they used the cochineal to continue their efforts to remove artificial ingredients from their products. However, even though they plan to use vegan ingredients where possible, they also stated that this can never be guaranteed.

Its unclear as to whether Starbucks have ever publicly claimed that these drinks were vegan-friendly, but it seems that the company is prepared to take the views of their vegan customers on board Jenny adds.

Jenny concludes her blog post by offering up some vegan alternatives to cochineal. These include purple sweet potatoes, beets or even, particularly in the case of Starbucks strawberries!

Crimson Cup Coffee House Named 2012 Business of the Year

Columbus, OH (PRWEB) March 05, 2012

Crimson Cup Coffee House has been named 2012 Business of the Year by the Clintonville Chamber of Commerce. Operated by coffee roaster and coffee shop business consultant Crimson Cup Coffee & Tea, the business was honored for its economic and community contributions to the central Ohio suburb.

We are grateful to the Clintonville community for this honor, which affirms our vision as a company, said Crimson Cup Founder and President Greg Ubert. Crimson Cup is all about making communities better whether its Clintonville, our community of independent coffee shops across the country or the rural farming communities around the world that grow the coffee we import and roast.

In 2007, Crimson Cup applied lessons learned from 16 years as a coffee roaster and coffee shop business consultant to open its first retail location. Today, about 8,000 people per month stop by the Clintonville shop to enjoy great-tasting, locally roasted coffee drinks. In addition, prospective business coffee shop owners visit to learn about running a successful independent coffee shop.

The Coffee House acts as a test lab where we experiment with different products and try out ideas for improving independent coffee shop operations, said Crimson Cup Founder and President Greg Ubert. We share our findings with more than 300 independent coffee shops across 25 states that use Crimson Cup products. We also incorporate what we learn into our 7 Steps program, which is an alternative to expensive coffee shop franchises.

Unlike a coffee shop franchise, Crimson Cup’s 7 Steps program allows business owners to create a unique specialty coffee business that reflects their tastes and the needs of their local community.

We offer everything a coffee shop franchise does and more but without the franchise fees and restrictive business practices, Ubert said. We help the owner create a solid coffee shop business plan that covers all the bases, from choosing a location to hiring and training staff, choosing menu items, setting business hours and much more. The program includes several days of comprehensive free training to help the new venture get off to a great start.

The foundation of Crimson Cup’s 7 Steps program is Uberts book, Seven Steps to Success in the Specialty Coffee Industry. Now in its second printing, this common-sense guide was updated recently based on lessons learned from Crimson Cup Coffee House and Crimson Cup’s experience as a coffee shop business consultant to independent coffee shops across the country.

To learn more about the 7 Steps program or to schedule an initial consultation, call 888-800-9224 or visit the Crimson Cup website
