Coalition for American Electronics Recycling: Industry Effort to Limit Toxic E-Waste Exports Adds Sims Recycling Solutions, Bipartisan Co-sponsors

(PRWEB) December 20, 2011

The Coalition For American Electronics Recycling (CAER) today announced that Sims Recycling Solutions has joined the industry effort to support federal legislation that will restrict export of toxic electronic waste (e-waste) from the U.S. and spur creation of tens of thousands of jobs through expansion of the domestic recycling industry. In the House of Representatives, 13 co-sponsors have announced support for the bill, including six Republicans and seven Democrats.

With the addition of Sims Recycling Solutions, the largest e-recycling company in the world, CAER now includes 34 U.S. companies with 89 facilities involved in all aspects of the domestic electronics recycling and disposition industry, with operations in 32 states as well as the District of Columbia. (Complete membership list below, or visit the CAER website). Also supporting the legislation are Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Apple, Samsung, Best Buy and LG.

The addition of these industry leaders reflects growing consensus that the Responsible Electronics Recycling Act is good for business and will create much-needed jobs and enhance sustainability, said John Shegerian, Co-founder and President, Electronic Recyclers International. Our members are committed to growing an American industry with the capacity to manage e-waste generated within our borders and the potential to create tens of thousands of jobs in every part of the country.

Introduced in June, the Responsible Electronics Recycling Act (HR 2284/SB1270) would restrict toxic e-waste exports to developing countries that lack adequate safeguards for the environment and workers. There is growing bi-partisan support for the bill as additional co-sponsors have joined the bill in recent weeks. To support Representative Gene Green (D-TX), the lead House sponsor of the bill, 13 co-sponsors now include: Mike Thompson (D-CA), Lee Terry (R-NE), Steve LaTourette (R-OH), Anna Eshoo (D-CA), Blake Farenthold (R-TX), Charlie Gonzalez (D-TX), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Dennis Ross (R-FL), Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), Grace Napolitano (D-CA), Jeff Denham (R-CA), Jim Costa (D-CA) and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL). In the Senate, similar legislation is co-sponsored by U.S. Sens. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK).

CAERs emergence represents a major split in the recycling industry regarding e-waste exports. The industrys primary trade association, the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), has long opposed restrictions on e-waste exports. By joining CAER, ISRI members are breaking with the trade associations position and taking a stand in support of export restrictions on unprocessed electronic products that will create jobs and protect the environment.

Three of the seven companies on the CAER steering committee are also ISRI members, including Sims Recycling Solutions, Electronic Recyclers International, and Hugo Neu.

Unrestricted and unfair trade in electronic scrap with developing countries has thwarted the job growth that can come with a robust domestic recycling infrastructure, said CAER steering committee member David Zimet, President of Hesstech. The Responsible Electronics Recycling Act will enable American recyclers to make new investments in facilities and staff and personnel necessary to legitimize and grow an American industry and position America as a leader in global markets.

The Coalition is continuing to work with both the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, which have jurisdiction over the bills as well as other Congressional offices who would benefit from the job creation from this legislation. For more information about HR 2284/SB1270, visit the CAER website, which includes links to the full text of each bill.

Actor Stephen Baldwin, “Secret Millionaire” Dani Johnson, and Talk Radio’s Kevin McCullough Kick-Start Coalition to Rescue 2012 Orphans in 2012

New York, NY (PRWEB) April 30, 2012

XtreMEDIA, the media conglomerate of Actor Stephen Baldwin and Talk Media’s Kevin McCullough, announce the global effort “2012 in 2012: To rescue 2012 orphans in the year of 2012.”

“When I toured the places these children sleep and live in, I couldn’t help but be moved to do something about it. My whole family saw with our own eyes children who were dying or would die soon, simply because they had no food,” said actor Stephen Baldwin. “It is imperative to me, my media company, my family, my business partners, and every one I come into contact with to let them know how vital $ .25 can be. It can literally feed a meal to a child–who literally–will die without it.”

“I’ve stared into the eyes of Orphans in Eastern Europe, West Africa, and Central America, and though the geography is different, the one thing that never changes is how helpless they are to be able to feed themselves,” said Kevin McCullough, Fox News Commentator and Talk Radio Host. “Our partners are delivering life healing food for the rate of feeding an orphan for an entire year, for just $ 92–this is how simple it is to save a life? How can we get more people involved? How can we rescue more children? These questions haunt me each night…”

Joining the effort is newly minted national talk show host, and alum of ABC Television’s “Secret Millionaire” Dani Johnson.

“One of the things my clients and listeners get from me all the time is the absolute necessity that it is to put purpose to our money,” said Ms. Johnson. “It is of absolute urgency that we love these kids as best we can. And every single day we will blow cash on the most idiotic things in this world, why can’t we take even ten percent of that and feed children who will die unless we do? Two families have already committed to me that they will raise enough to feed 100 orphans each. I honor them and the children they will feed. But there is much, much, more to do.”

“2012 in 2012″ has also been joined by two major charities whose almost exclusive focus are children without families.

FOOD FOR ORPHANS is a 501c3 feeding ministry headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Gary Van Dyke is the CEO and Founder.

“When we deliver the recipe to the orphans we see a light come on in their eyes. And as we feed them over time, we see them succeeding at life,” said Van Dyke. “There is no greater feeling in this life than to hand a child who is hungry a bowl full of rice, chicken, vegetables, beans, and seventeen specific vitamins and nutrients that food scientists told us are extremely deficient in orphans bodies.”

KING’S RANSOM FOUNDATION is 501c3 charity based in Kerrville, Texas that extends 100% of its attention and proceeds to those who hurt, who are hungry, who are in desperate need.

King’s Ransom Foundation is eager to join forces with the ’2012 in 2012′ Campaign aiming to feed 2012 orphans in 2012. And because of this principle that we hold to, we’ve decided to match every gift given through the website, http://2012in2012.info,” said Cindy McFaden of KRF. “We never underestimate the power of One and together we can make a difference and help feed the children. Let’s do this!

XtreMEDIA is also interested in engaging other media partners for the 2012 in 2012 efforts.

“If you are a television, radio, or new media personality who has a passion to help hungry kids, we would love for you to join us in this amazing quest,” said McCullough. “We will link arm in arm with anyone and everyone who is moved to do this, to be part of it, and to see orphans fed.”

Coalition Meets with DHS Regarding TPS Request for Syrian Nationals

Washington, DC (PRWEB) February 24, 2012

Today, United for a Free Syria (UFS) along with the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), Arab American Institute (AAI), and Syrian American Public Affairs Council (SAPAC) met with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to discuss the request for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrian nationals, who are currently in the United States.

In close coordination with a broad coalition, on January 25, 2012, UFS formally requested that the Secretary of the DHS grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS), under section 244 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, to Syrian nationals presently in the United States. The request was sent directly to DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano. In addition to UFS and the ADC, the coalition included Syrian Expatriates Organization (SEO), Syrian Emergency Task Force (SETF), Syrian Americans for Democracy (SAD), South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), and Refugee Council USA (RCUSA). Additional organizations have endorsed the petition for TPS since it was filed.

Neustar Becomes First Select Member of Arbor Networks Cloud Signaling Coalition to Stop the Evolving DDoS Threat to Data Centers

CHELMSFORD, MA (PRWEB) February 29, 2012

Arbor Networks, Inc., a leading provider of security and network management solutions for enterprises data centers and carrier networks, announced today that Neustar has become the first Select level service provider to operationalize Arbors Cloud Signaling capability in a service offering. The Cloud Signaling Coalition (CSC) is an innovative partnership between service providers, data center operators and enterprises with the mission to ensure the availability of their network infrastructure and speed time-to-mitigation for distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

CSC Select level providers have invested in the skills, infrastructure and commercial capabilities necessary to offer their customers a higher level of DDoS mitigation protection. CSC Select providers are audited by Arbor Networks to ensure they meet the following criteria:

1. Have a commercial in-cloud DDoS protection service that can accept cloud signals from Arbors Pravail Availability Protection System (APS).

2. Maintain a 24×7 on-site security operations center (SOC) that is fully staffed with Arbor trained personnel.

3. Have an in-cloud DDoS mitigation service that provides a minimum of 40 Gbps of mitigation capacity.

CSC Select providers offer some of the most comprehensive DDoS protection services in the industry today, and are backed by the expertise of Arbor products and services.

Neustars SiteProtect cloud-based DDoS mitigation service allows customers’ Internet connected infrastructure to operate normally while under attack, thus avoiding downtime and the associated loss of potential revenue. Combined with Neustars UltraDNS, SiteProtect arms customers with strong protection bundles that provide security for their entire Internet connected infrastructure (e.g. DNS, Web servers, FTP servers, APIs, databases, etc.). When a DDoS attack hits, SiteProtect is activated via a simple DNS or BGP change to route the customers’ traffic to the cloud-based Arbor Networks powered, traffic scrubbing centers where legitimate traffic is forwarded on and the attack traffic is contained. SiteProtect only charges a per incident fee beyond the monthly subscription and does not charge based on the size of an attack.

Neustar and Arbor have a long history of collaboration in the area of cloud-based DDoS mitigation. As threats proliferate, hundreds of the largest Internet companies trust Neustar to protect their brands. They look to us for continuous innovation and state-of-the-art solutions to protect their networks from todays dynamic threats, said Alex Berry, senior vice president Enterprise Services, Neustar.

As distributed DDoS attacks escalate in size and complexity, their detection and mitigation requires the collaboration of all stakeholdersfrom the customer premise to the service provider cloud. The Cloud Signaling Coalition from Arbor Networks enables this collaboration. It provides an infrastructure that facilitates local and upstream mitigation of edge-based, application-layer DDoS attacks as well as cloud-

based, volumetric DDoS attacks in an automated and real-time manner, said Arbor Networks president Colin Doherty.

ECS Works with Industry Coalition to Limit Toxic E-Waste Exports and Welcomes Sims Recycling Solutions to the Effort

Santa Clara, California (PRWEB) December 21, 2011

ECS Refining, the ethical leader in electronics waste recycling and end-of-life services, today announced that the Coalition For American Electronics Recycling (CAER) has added a substantial partner – Sims Recycling Solutions to the industry effort to support federal legislation that will restrict export of toxic electronic waste (e-waste) from the U.S. and spur expansion of the domestic recycling economy providing tens of thousands of new jobs.

With the addition of Sims Recycling Solutions, CAER now includes 34 U.S. companies involved in all aspects of the domestic electronics recycling and disposition industry (ITAD), with operations in 31 states as well as the District of Columbia. Alliance members of CAER also supporting the legislation include Hewlett Packard, Dell, Apple, Samsung, Best Buy and LG Electronics.

The Responsible Electronics Recycling Act (HR 2284/SB1270) would restrict toxic e-waste exports to developing countries that lack adequate safeguards for the environment and workers. Were excited to see a rapid increase in the addition of electronics recycling, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and other industry leaders to our coalition, said Jim Taggart, Chief Executive Officer, ECS Refining. With numerous Congressmen coming on board as supporters, the passing of this Bill is becoming closer to reality. This initiative affects all U.S. citizens in terms of new jobs and our responsibility to the global environment.

CAERs emergence represents a major split in the recycling industry regarding e-waste exports. The industrys primary trade association, the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), has long opposed restrictions on e-waste exports. By joining CAER (some of which are also ISRI members), ISRI members are breaking with the trade associations position and taking a stand in support of export restrictions of whole electronic products which will result in the creation of jobs and better protection the environment.

Save Darfur Coalition says No Bailout for Sudan’s $34 Billion Debt

Istanbul (Vocus) October 5, 2009 -

The Save Darfur Coalition is at the IMF and World Bank Meetings asking officials not to forgive Sudan’s debt. Save Darfur considers Sudan’s debt to be odious, meaning it was borrowed and used against the interests of its own people, in this case, used to finance civil war in the south and genocide against the people of Darfur.

Sudan currently holds USD$ 34 billion in debt, owed mostly to the IMF/World Bank, western Chinese and Arab creditors. And according to a recent policy report published by the IMF, of all countries, Sudan has the most overdue arrears to the Fund – owing 75% of the USD$ 2.09 billion in total backpayments. Now, with the global economic recession bringing down oil prices, Sudan’s Minister of Finance, Dr. Awad Ahmed Al-Jaz is in Istanbul asking for a debt-relief package from the IMF and the World Bank.

At the height of meetings in Istanbul, Save Darfur is offering recommendations to the World Bank, the IMF and international leaders on how to deal with odious debt and on what conditions Sudan’s debt can and should be relieved.

Save Darfur is calling on the international community to make clear that Sudan’s debt can only be forgiven if there is significant progress toward:

Peace in Darfur
The full implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), and
Significant structural reforms that fundamentally change the repressive systems in Sudan.
“The international community should deal simultaneously with Sudan’s economic challenges and human rights abuses. Providing debt relief to Sudan before its leaders demonstrate a commitment to peace will not serve the interests of the Sudanese people, it will only give more political legitimacy and further financial resources to the repressive regime in Khartoum,” says Save Darfur’s Senior Policy Advisor Sean Brooks.

About Save Darfur Coalition: The Save Darfur Coalition – an alliance of more than 180 faith-based, advocacy and human rights organizations – raises public awareness about the ongoing genocide in Darfur and mobilizes a unified response to the atrocities that threaten the lives of people throughout the Darfur region. The coalition’s member organizations represent 130 million people of all ages, races, religions and political affiliations united together to help the people of Darfur.
