Deloitte says number of retailers falling into administration rises in Q1. Big4.com reports on research.

Big4.com, the premier social networking forum for professionals and alumni of Accenture, Andersen, BearingPoint, Capgemini, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers, PwC, reports on research done by Deloitte that shows retail administrations in Q1 2012 jumped by 64% on the previous quarter, when 42 retailers businesses failed. These numbers contrast with the number of companies falling into administration, excluding retailers, in Q1 2012, that saw a decline of 10%, from 497 in Q1 2011 to 447.

Deloittes recent Store of the Future report, also described how retailers need to redefine their store proposition and focus on changing client needs. According to Big4.com, the report suggests that some retailers may have to reduce their property portfolios by up to 40% in the next five years and adapt to meet these changing demands.

Lee Manning, restructuring services partner at Deloitte says the recent numbers are especially important in terms of jobs lost.

The first quarter of 2012 is particularly significant given the high profile nature of the companies we have seen enter administration: Peacocks, Game, La Senza, Blacks and Past Times, he says. The number of job losses that came as a result of these administrations was almost 10,000 out of the 22,000 employed by those companies. In contrast, Q1 2011 saw far lower levels of job losses. Overall, for 2011 and the first quarter of 2012 the largest 15 retail insolvencies had 2,800 stores and only 1,350 stores have survived; an attrition rate of 52%.

The grant will be used to study international apparel retailing and the effects of brands on international consumers ages 18 to 25. Drs. Youn-Kyung Kim, Dee Knight and Judith Forney in SMHM and Dr. Lou Pelton, professor in the Department of Marketing and Logisitcs in COBA, will be conducting the research.

“This is a collaborative effort between not only COBA and SMHM but also the Center for Distributed Learning, who will assist in the dissemination of the results for pedagogical purposes,” said Pelton. “We will examine Polo and Levis as well as other brands; however, the challenge is finding a brand that is ubiquitous in all countries.”

Faculty and students in China, Nigeria, Argentina, India, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan and the U.S. will participate in the study. Comparisons of college student groups between the U.S. and target international markets will give students a real-world example of marketing strategies that could be used by a U.S. retailer in the global marketplace.

By examining the impact of branding and how well certain brands are recognized in international markets, the team hopes to shed some light on what drives the international consumer. The results of the study will be of interest to retailers in the United States as well as those abroad.

Stephanie Condon’s CBS article, explains the “Buffet Rule” simply as “to compel those making $ 1 million or more a year to pay a rate no lower than what middle income Americans pay. Taxpayers making $ 1 million or more often make their money through investment, or unearned, income, which is taxed at a lower rate than wage, or earned, income. Most Americans make their income through wages, which are taxed on a sliding scale that tops out at 35 percent.”
